About
Baobab Arts
WHO WE ARE
Baobab Arts is a non-profit cultural arts organization founded in 2008 to preserve, present, and provide access to the traditional arts of Africa and the African Diaspora.
The term African Diaspora is emblematic of the forced dispersal of Africans from their ancestral homeland, and is a collation of populations that includes, but is not limited to, descendants of enslaved West African people in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and South America.
WHAT WE DO
Through ongoing workshops, classes, and events, we make the traditional arts and culture of Africa and the Diaspora more accessible to Canadian audiences. Based in Toronto, we aim to be the source for authentic, traditional arts and cultural activities representing Africa and the Diaspora.
ABOUT THE BAOBAB TREE
The majestic baobab tree, with its massive trunk and sturdy roots, is widely viewed as a symbol of Africa. These iconic trees usually serve as a city hall of sorts, where gatherings, social activities, and important discussions are often held. The very presence of these trees is central to the spiritual and cultural life of the community.
